AI, artificial intelligence, is everywhere. With the release of ChatGPT, a conversational AI system, artificial intelligence has become even more prevalent on college campuses. This popularity necessitates a need for faculty and students to have AI literacy, a set of competencies for understanding and using AI ethically. Mary Lou Maher shares how UNC Charlotte is striving to educate students on artificial intelligence and the importance of becoming AI literate. Mary Lou Maher’s academic career has taken a path of AI research and teaching that started in Engineering, through Architecture and Design Computing, and now Computer Science and Information Studies. A consistent focus of her research is on human cognition and A.I. models related to curiosity, novelty, and surprise. While she has taught and researched in the areas of human-centered AI and inclusive education for many years, the response to her most recent AI Literacy course has revealed new insights about students and their views of A.I. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
