NOTE: This video does not speak to the costs for artist licensing like those that re-issue labels have for licensing material from artists and/or labels which can be significant (like the Steely Dan series on UHQR for Analogue Productions). Labels which control and/or own the artists' material have a much lower cost in this area vs. re-issue labels. Especially high are the arrangements for highly popular top shelf artists and/or the estates of deceased artists.
This video looks at the market cost for creating records at a pressing plant and the mastering costs to get a lacquer produced.
It's something I've been curious about as the cost of vinyl has risen steadily along with the reset of the everything we buy.
Is it really a profit grab? Or is it merely the cost of doing business? Labor, materials, utilities, rents are all on the rise - big time.
