FOOTBALL: Millington 30, Overton 14
Homecoming 2023 on the campus of Millington Central High School needed the perfect ending.

In order for that to happen, the Millington Trojans had to contain Overton Wolverine quarterback Gary Greer. The Trojans managed to stop Greer and his teammates enough Friday night to prevail 30-14.

“I think the defense just hung on,” Millington Head Coach Chris Michael said. “We knew the challenge that we were facing. Man, that guy is unbelievable. You just can’t tackle him. We’ve watched every game film they’ve played this year. Nobody could do anything with him, Munford, Brighton…”

Overton (4-3) put up solid numbers in wins over Ridgeway, Kirby, Central and Brighton. Michael’s and staff prepared the defense for Greer all week with assistant coach McGhee running the scout team offense. Another strategy of the Trojan defense was using six to eight defensive backs.

Both team’s game plans were interrupted by turnovers in the first quarter. Millington’s Cameron Puryear ended an Overton drive with a fumble recovery near the end zone.

The Trojans’ first possession concluded with a fumble as well. Millington was first on the scoreboard in the second quarter with a Chase Michael 31-yard field goal.
