RSPB NI Conservation Officer Francis Flanagan explains the features and benefits of a hedgerow managed for nature on working farmland.

This video is one of a series of five produced by the RSPB in Northern Ireland, focusing on the options available through the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs’ Environmental Farming Scheme (EFS) to farmers and land managers as part of this programme.

Hedgerows support wildlife on farms that are beneficial for the pollination of crops, pest species control and livestock shelter as well as storing carbon and providing nesting and foraging sites for farmland birds.

A well-maintained hedgerow will increase biodiversity on farms as well as creating nature corridors in the landscape and various options are available as part of the wider and higher levels of the Environmental Farming Scheme.
