Plot Summary

One day, Holloway encounters a small golden-furred humanoid whom he affectionately names “Little Fuzzy.” To his surprise, Little Fuzzy introduces Holloway to his family, revealing their apparently intelligent behavior.

As the Company becomes aware of the Fuzzies’ potential sapience, they take drastic measures. If the Fuzzies are indeed a sapient species, it would mean turning Zarathustra into a protected aboriginal zone, installing a proper government, and challenging the Company’s complete control over the planet’s resources. Leonard Kellogg, a member of Grego’s staff, leads a team of scientists determined to disprove the Fuzzies’ intelligence at any cost.

Holloway, suspicious of Kellogg’s intentions, resists his efforts. When Kellogg kills one of the Fuzzies in anger, Holloway presses charges of murder. The court proceedings become a battleground for determining the Fuzzies’ sapience. It is eventually proven that these endearing creatures possess at least the mental capacity of a ten-year-old human child and communicate with each other ultrasonically.

Kellogg’s tragic suicide doesn’t halt the prosecution, and the court officially rules that the Fuzzies are indeed sapient beings. This decision invalidates the Company’s charter and sets the stage for a new understanding of life on Zarathustra.
