Here’s a typical linear settlement, with houses clinging to both sides of a road. However, thanks to footpaths, it’s a circular walk today. Our first major landmark of note to pass is a hotel, and straight away we’re into a piece of history. Its chief builders were the Willoughby family. Perhaps the most famous resident of the village was Sir Hugh Willoughby. He was a navigator, who sailed in 1553, with three ships, in search of the North-east passage, but ended up frozen to death with all his crew in the following January.

As a linear village, there’s no real centre but you might possibly be able to define one by the location of three buildings - two of them are the church and school. The other is the village hall. Rush Meadow is literally yards away from that with a sign telling us that the name of the village translates from Anglo Saxon to “Rush Meadow”. The village was recorded in the Domesday Book as Riselia and Riselei. Rush Meadow is also believed to be the last untouched area of the original Anglo Saxon settlement.

The church building is over 400 years old. It’s a is Grade II listed building, built for Sir Michael Willoughby as a domestic chapel to the hall in 1593. Consecrated in 1632, its one of only six built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The Willoughby family’s coat of arms can be seen above the door, with the date 1593.

Next to the church along Derby Road is the Latin House, a fellow Grade II structure which was described by Pevsner as "one of the finest buildings in the country". It was built in 1706 for Elizabeth Grey. The Latin House was part of the former Grammar School. It was built to accommodate pupils, a schoolmaster and an usher. The City separates Latin House from some more Grade II listed buildings, Latin College and Latin Cottage

There’s a story to tell here as well. After being lost for a time, a Lanx (A Roman plate) was found here, then lost, and then forged and sold to the British Museum. The fate of the original lanx is unknown. It’s just one of more interesting things about the parish of RISLEY.
