Assumption Cathedral is one of the most visited Orthodox sights of Kharkiv and one of the oldest Orthodox churches in the city, it is the fifth of the twelve official symbols of the city. The temple was built in 1685-1687, but since the 17th century it has been rebuilt several times. The Assumption Cathedral was a building visited by all Russian emperors, starting with Catherine the Great, with the exception of Paul the First. The body of the deceased Emperor Alexander I was in it for three days. The building was included in all guidebooks as one of the main city attractions, despite the fact that the temple ceased to be the main church of Kharkov in 1846.
