Montecatini Alto è il centro storico di Montecatini Terme.
La storia antica di Montecatini Alto inizia con le guerre comunali del XII secolo fino ad arrivare al 1300 quando il borgo aveva delle solide mura con ben 9 porte e 25 torri, per eccellere nella difesa dei sui abitanti, visto che si trovava in un contesto geografico denso di tensioni tra Firenze e Lucca.

Disposto geograficamente su due poggi da un lato si affaccia imponente la Rocca di Castello Vecchio, la Chiesa di San Pietro (ex chiesa del castello di Montecatini) e la Torre Campanaria, mentre dall’altro lato è possibile scorgere la Torre dell’Orologio e la Chiesa del Carmine in stile barocco.
Caratterizzato dai suoi strettissimi vicoli che lo attraversano per intero, avvicinandosi alla piccola piazza al centro del borgo si possono trovare alcuni piccoli negozi di artigianato caratteristici.
Un altro delizioso modo per raggiungere la cima (da una settimana prima di Pasqua al 31 ottobre) è quello di usare la funicolare a bordo dei trenini rossi Gigio e Gigia che hanno sulle spalle oltre un secolo di storia.

Se Montecatini Terme è dunque il luogo dove rilassare corpo e anima, immersi in un’elegante atmosfera liberty, Montecatini Alto offre invece uno scorcio diverso, un’altra prospettiva. Racconta di sé attraverso mura forti, pietra e storia. Ci porta indietro di secoli, fino al Medioevo.

Montecatini Alto is the historic center of Montecatini Terme.
The ancient history of Montecatini Alto begins with the municipal wars of the twelfth century up to 1300 when the village had solid walls with 9 gates and 25 towers, to excel in the defense of its inhabitants, since it was located in a geographical context full of tensions between Florence and Lucca.

Arranged geographically on two hills, on one side the Rocca di Castello Vecchio, the Church of San Pietro (former church of the Montecatini castle) and the Bell Tower overlooks the imposing, while on the other side it is possible to see the Clock Tower and the Church of the Carmine in Baroque style.
Characterized by its very narrow alleys that cross it entirely, approaching the small square in the center of the village you can find some small characteristic craft shops.
Another delicious way to reach the top (from a week before Easter to October 31st) is to use the funicular aboard the red trains Gigio and Gigia which have over a century of history on their shoulders.

If Montecatini Terme is therefore the place to relax body and soul, immersed in an elegant liberty atmosphere, Montecatini Alto instead offers a different glimpse, another perspective. It tells about itself through strong walls, stone and history. It takes us back centuries, to the Middle Ages.
