When you get a new credit card for travel hacking and you’re married, you want both spouse’s expenditures to work towards your new card’s minimum spend to earn that sign-up bonus, right?!
Most Chase cards can be asked to be expedited to you, so that you get not only the original card sent to you via snail mail, but you get a 2nd card with the exact same card number expedited 2-4 days after asking.
Every once in a while, co-branded cards can’t be expedited. This just happened to me with my new Southwest Business Performance card. I have another workaround to share with you, on how your spouse's expenses can still count towards your minimum spend.
This workaround includes Apple Pay, Walmart Pay, or buying Gift Cards.
Put the new credit card in your spouse’s Apple Pay and, if you shop at Walmart, the Walmart app’s Walmart Pay. While most places do accept Apple Pay, Walmart doesn’t. But when you get to the register, you can pay with a digital card already saved to Walmart Pay.
I could also buy my spouse Visa Gift Cards with my new credit card. Once a month at both Staples and Office Depot, they offer fee-free Visa gift cards. Check out the link in my video’s description to find out when this is going on and how it works.
For all other purchases that you can’t use Apple Pay, Walmart Pay, or gift cards on, like gas stations, have your spouse use a Chase business card if they have one. Reason being is that Chase likes to see spending on your existing business cards before they give you more. The Ink Cash earns 2 points per dollar spent at gas stations.
I will also use my Chase Sapphire Preferred at restaurants as it earns 3 points per dollar spent on dining.
Finally, in lieu of gift cards, I may also use my World of Hyatt card. Reason being is that you get rewarded for spending $15,000 in one calendar year on the Hyatt card. When you reach $15,000, you earn a second Hyatt Free Night Award, with the first one earned automatically every year just by having the card. Also, for every $5,000 you spend on the Hyatt card, you'll earn 2 qualifying night awards which can earn you free Club Access awards. I want to amass as many Hyatt points as possible as their points stretch the most when redeeming points for free travel.
