Based on George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, My Fair Lady is a musical with a Cockney flower girl who takes speech lessons from professor Henry Higgins so that she can pass as a lay. Higgins takes credit for Eliza's success, but she realizes that she can now be independent and does not need him.

The musical's Broadway production was a smash hit, setting a new record for the longest run of any major musical theatre production in history. While most audience members will have images of Rex Harrison and Audrey Hepburn in the starring roles courtesy of the movie, the role of Eliza originally when to Julie Andrews on stage. The movie producer wanted a known actress to play Eliza not a Broadway ingenue to play the part. Ironically, later Julie Andrews would replace Mary Martin as Maria in the film version of Sound of Music.
