The early Vulcans were far more savage and barbaric than they are now, and even worse than humans were, according to Spock. It was the teachings of Surak to employ pure logical pursuits and the suppression of emotion that saved the Vulcan people from themselves, and probably the rest of the Star Trek galaxy.
