Absalom and Achitophel is a satirical poem by John Dryden. It was published in the year 1681. Dryden wrote this poem in support of King Charles II, who faced Exclusion Crisis from 1679-1681. Taking the story from Biblical times, Dryden composed Absalom and Achitophel as a warning to the English people that if they go against their King, the repercussions would be dangerous.
Since this poem is a political allegory, King David represents King Charles II, Absalom represents Monmouth, the illegitimate son of Charles II, Achitophel represents Earl of Shaftesbury, et al. Understand this poem, make notes and do not forget to subscribe to our channel.
