It has been a dream of mine since moving to Vancouver Island to witness the herring spawn in full swing in the Comox, Hornby Island area. After 3 years of missing it, I finally was able to go out with my friend and amazing guide Captain Pete from the https://ssfunship.com/ to finally see it in real life. If you're unaware, each year in March these small fish about 7-10" in length amass by the thousands to spawn on the west coast and all around Vancouver Island. These small fish are broadcast spawners which means, the females lay their eggs close to shore in shallow waters and the males come in behind with their "milt." Because they do it all in massive groups of fish their spawn changes the colour of the ocean from a deep blue to all shades and colours of blue, green, teal etc. It's truly magical to see. Following that the wild life that they bring with them includes various birds, fish, seals, sea lions, whales, bears and wolves to name a few. They are a keystone species who's numbers have been in decline over the years, however due to conservation efforts they're slowly making a comeback, which is great news for the west coast eco systems that rely on them!
