This video will be a summary of Compete to Create by Michael Gervais and Pete Carroll. This is the best self-improvement book I've ever read (and I’ve read countless). The authors are world class. Michael Gervais is the best applied sport psychologist in the world and Pete Caroll is the coach for the Seattle Seahawks.

So let's get into it.

Compete to Create can be divided into 3 parts:
1. Discovery process
2. Psychological Frameworks
3. Mindset skills

The discovery process helps you gain clarity of who you are and where you want to go. The psychological frameworks and mindset skills help you harness the power of your mind to achieve calm, confidence, deep focus, and the ability to trust yourself.

The discovery process includes an exercise to discover a personal Philosophy. Michael Gervais tells us: “Almost across the board, the highest performers operate from a clear and finely tuned personal philosophy.” You can think of a personal Philosophy as your life compass, which helps guide your thoughts and actions.

To find your personal philosophy, you can complete a 3 step process. As an example, I will complete this exercise through the perspective of earth’s most valuable player, Elon Musk.

First, write three columns on a page In the first column, include people who inspire you or are influential to you. In the second column, make a list of words that each person represents to you, words that are associated with the person. In the third column, include quotes or words that inspire you

Now, circle the words that jump out at you and are meaningful to you. Feel your way through this part of the process

Finally, work on stringing the words together into a single statement. You can consider this the first draft of your personal philosophy.

Once you have a personal philosophy you can move on to creating a vision for your life. Where your personal philosophy is the compass, your vision is the destination.

To form your vision, you need to explore deep questions. Such as what does success look like for you? What are you trying to accomplish?

For example, Michael Phelp’s vision was to change the sport of swimming. According to his autobiography, when Phelp’s agent asked him, “What do you want for your future, Michael?” he boldly responded “I want to change the sport of swimming. I want people to talk about it, think about it, and look forward to seeing it. I want them to want to jump in and do it.” That vision brought meaning and purpose to Phelps career and guided his goals, thoughts, and actions.

A vision is different from goals. Goals are achievable milestones that help you get closer to your vision. Goals also have an endpoint. Once you have accomplished a goal, you’re finished with it, and on to the next one.

Michael Gervais says: “A vision is bigger, bolder, and audacious. A vision does not have a clear finish line. It's more of an ideal to aim for rather than a box to check. It’s a projection of yourself into the future in a way that aligns meaning and purpose for you.”

Once you have established clarity through your philosophy and vision, you can then use mindset skills to help you achieve your goals and bring your vision to life.

These mindset skills include optimism, flow states, visual imagery, mindfulness training, and more. Check out Compete to Create to hear Michael Gervais in-depth thoughts on these topics. The book includes examples of how Michael and Pete apply mindset training with the Seattle Seahawks and other world class performers.
