On July 16, the Berggruen China Center hosted former Berggruen fellow Professor LI Chenyang for a talk on Confucian Ren and Care. The lecture aims to analyze and exchange views on the moral core of ren and caring in Prof. Li’s new book Reshaping Confucianism: A Progressive Inquiry (Oxford University Press, 2023). Ren is the core concept of Confucianism, and scholars have always interpreted ren in terms of love. Care is the central concept of care ethics that has emerged in recent decades. Since Prof. Li put forward the “Confucian Care Thesis” in 1992, there have been different opinions in the academia, and at the same time, more and more scholars have interpreted ren in terms of “care”. The lecture reviews the main points and examines the significance of the discussion in the context of the new book.
