I learned all about soil blocking tips and tricks over the past few months! As I've expanded the garden, the need for more seed starting supplies has grown as well. I had a few nice cell trays, but most were old, flimsy, and falling apart. They definitely would not keep up with this year's projects! At the start of the planting season, I wondered if it was going to be worth the extra effort to make soil blocks - the answer is, unequivocally, yes!

If you’re new to this idea, in essence, soil blocking is taking a dampened soil mixture of your choice, and compressing it into cubes using a specialized tool called a soil blocker. It’s an alternative to using cell trays or pots for starting your seeds. There are a few different sizes of soil blockers - I started with a 2x2” blocker, and that worked great, though I think I’ll invest in a ¾” blocker in the future for things like lettuces that can be planted out fairly quickly in our zone 8b organic garden.

My organic garden is in zone 8b in the Pacific Northwest of the US, using no till/no dig techniques. I have a small suburban homestead, growing as much food as I can on a normal sized lot. No lawns here - just vegetables and chickens, plus a whole lot of hard work and joy.
