Just learning George Benson Licks is not as efficient as trying to figure out why they sound good in my experience. This video takes a 4 bar phrase out of a George Benson solo and analyzes it both in terms of the notes, arpeggios, extensions etc. But more importantly also looking at how the melody is constructed and how George Benson manages to play great sounding lines in his solo.
Bensons playing is firmly rooted in the Bebop/Hardbop tradition and is a great place to learn jazz phrasing in that tradition. Of course his impressive technique and timing is also something you can learn a lot from in the process.
