Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Wednesday defended the police over the custodial death of Akshay Shinde, who sexually assaulted two girls in a school toilet in Badlapur, saying the officers shot him in self-defence.

Eknath Shinde accused the opposition of playing politics and hypocrisy over the Badlapur incident.

"The police fired in self-defence. They had guns, not for show. If he had fled, the opposition would have criticised them and said we forced him to flee. Policemen were injured in the encounter. We should support the police," he said.
