As day was breaking on November 18 in the Mississippi Delta the hen turkeys began waking up the woods with soft tree yelps. A young gobbler managed a rough gobble that kicked off over 30 minutes if yelps, kee kees, and gobbles that kept me entranced.
The turkeys were more vocal than any I’ve ever heard in the fall.
There were at least 2 gobblers participating, but there could have been more.
They were gobbling on top of each other sometimes 3 in a row.
In my heart I imagined longboards, but the odds are they are Jakes since they were intermingled with a large group of hens during the fall.
