Mimar Sinan, who is undoubtedly the greatest name in the history of Turkish architecture, is one of the greatest architects not only of the Ottoman Empire, but also of the world. The works of this great architect, whose identity went far beyond the geographical boundaries of the time he was born and grew up, continue to be the witness of his age and keep the Ottoman identity alive in a wide geography that includes many countries.

Mimar Sinan has created approximately 477 works in 16 different genres. Even in our age where construction technology and engineering solutions are developing rapidly, no other architect other than Mimar Sinan has succeeded in creating this variety and number of works.

Although 500 years have passed since its construction, more than 120 of his works are still in use today. In a long life of about 100 years, Suleiman the Magnificent, II. Selim and III. He served as the chief architect during the reign of 3 sultans like Murat. Mimar Sinan, who was born in Agirnas village of Kayseri on May 29, 1489, was recruited as a novice boy and joined the Belgrade, Rhodes, Mohac, Vienna, Germany and Iraq expeditions with the army after the training he received in the palace. After the 1526 Battle of Mohaç, he was appreciated for his efforts and promoted to the position of Company Commander. Afterwards, he becomes the Head of the Mainspring and the Chief Technician. The bridge, which was needed during these expeditions, attracted attention with the boats he built to cross the rivers and lakes on the camp and the road.

During the Persian Campaign of Suleiman the Magnificent in 1533, he gained a great reputation by constructing and equipping three galleys in two weeks to go from Lake Van to the opposite shore. Upon his return from the Iranian Campaign, he was given the rank of Haseki, which was highly respected in the Janissary Corps. Especially during the Black Moldavian campaign in 1538, he provided the army to cross with the bridge he built over the Prut river. This bridge, which Sinan built in thirteen days, has become a legend. Mimar Sinan describes this event as follows.
“I immediately started the construction of a beautiful bridge over the aforementioned water. I built a high bridge in 10 days. The army of Islam and the king of all living things passed with joy.” Thanks to this reputation, he was appointed as the Chief Architect and continued this duty for fifty years. Stating that he studied the important structures in the regions he was in and took lessons from them, Sinan, in addition to his knowledge and skills in the profession of architecture; common sense also receives the reward of living a long life.

Three works he did before he was appointed as Chief Architect are quite remarkable. These; Hüsreviye Complex in Aleppo, Çoban Mustafa Complex in Gebze and Haseki Complex that he built for Hürrem Sultan in Istanbul.

Mimar Sinan is the main creator of the classical period in Ottoman architecture, in other words, an artist who founded a school. By combining the concepts of beauty and function in his works, he combined the creativity of engineering technique with the taste of the artist and created original structures.
According to the available sources, there is the "Age of Sinan" in Ottoman and World Architecture. Likewise, a strong Sinan School was formed in Ottoman architecture during his lifetime.

Thus, with his students and works, Mimar Sinan continued his influence in Ottoman architecture and his guidance in the following centuries. Mimar Sinan is known as an architect with his prominent identity. But architecture alone is not enough to define it. He is also a good engineer, a good logistician, city designer, planner and manager.

With the decision of the International Astronomical Union in 1976, a crater on Mercury was named Sinan Crater.

The Drina bridge, which was included in the World Cultural Heritage List by UNESCO in 2007, is also one of the 6 historical bridges included in the world cultural heritage.
Selimiye Mosque, which he built in Edirne, was included in the World Cultural Heritage list in 2011.
