Mauna Kea was a trip highlight for us! There are a few short trails that offer great views next to the Visitor Center on the Mauna Kea Access Road. Our favorite was Sunset Trail, across the road from the parking lot. It offered great views midday, but unbeatable views during sunset!! Being at 9,000 feet it's often above the clouds, but there are days when it rains and those clouds block the view. On a clear evening, the stars are beautiful!! Highly recommend the sunset here!! There are tour groups that will drive you all the way to the top of Mauna Kea for Sunrise. Although we didn't do that tour, I imagine the views are spectacular!! If you are looking for a longer, more challenging hike, Humu'ula Trail might be for you! It took us 3 attempts before the weather cooperated for us. In February, this trail was closed 50% of the time due to poor weather (blizzard & high winds), so if it's on your bucketlist to climb the tallest mountain in the world, plan this earlier during your trip!

If attempting a sunset or sunrise, check the weather first. The website below is what the rangers use. They will also post on this same website if road is open or closed to get to the Mauna Kea Summit.
