A friend was giving away this old desk and I was able to snag it for free!
You could definitely tell that this desk was very well loved and it was ready ready for a makeover. It has pieces of solid pine wood and also some Pressed-wood. There were some of the pressed wood pieces that were chipped off and some of the wood had some deep scratches on it. But otherwise it’s structurally sound and sturdy.
To start things off I removed all the drawers and began giving this entire piece a good cleaning using soapy water and then coming back with clean water to remove any residue.
The top drawer had this flower inlay and I wasn’t loving the look of it so I used some wood filler to fill it in.
I also went ahead and filled in all the existing hardware holes
After all the wood glue dried I pulled out my hand sander and sanded the fronts of the drawers.
Then I gave them a good cleaning again to remove any of the sawdust.
Because some of the desk is made of a press board with lament on it I’m going to use a adhesive primer. I have used this primer on several different projects and it’s great stuff and it goes a long way.
So even though I use the Heese of a primer I am going to go ahead and use a second coat of kills all purpose primer. I’m i’m doing this just so that I don’t have to add more coats of paint. This primer is super cheap and it’s great to help get a little bit coverage since I’m going with a lighter color of paint.
So now that I got a second coat of primer on and I allowed that to dry I am going to be using kills chalk style paint in the color of platinum ring. I know that Color doesn’t show up real well here on camera but it is a really nice light gray with a little bit of a blue undertone. So after I applied a couple coats of the paint to the desk I went ahead and primed the drawers and painted them.
So to cover the backside of the desk along with the one side that has a little bit of damage on it I am using a sheet of b board. We measured down the size that we needed and cut it out using a jigsaw and then tested it out to see how it would luck and I went ahead and traced out to see which part of the back would show from the front of the desk and I went ahead and painted that.
So now I got all painted I’ll put it on the back of the desk and nailed it in place using a finishing nail gun.
So now that I’ve got it all put together It’s time to seal it.
I am using Varathane triple thick polyurethane. This sealer is super thick and concentrator and has great self leveling abilities.
So this is where my plans changed a bit. Once I got it in the kitchen I realize that it wasn’t going to fit very well in the middle of the kitchen as a kitchen island as I had originally planned. But it fit very nicely beside my stove so that is where it’s home will be for now.

I found some scrap wood that we had and I trimmed them down to be the same size and line them up and you’re using them as a countertop. If this was in the middle of my kitchen I would definitely secure the boards to the desk but since this is against the wall and the oven I am not worried about the boards moving or being knocked off.
With the help of my hubby we installed new hardware onto the drawers
And it is now complete. Just a quick reminder of what the desk look like before and here it is now as a kitchen coffee bar / cabinet counter.
