The pitman arm translates the rotational movement of the steering gear to side to side movement in the steering linkage. A common failure in the pitman arm is a worn ball joint. Once this ball joint has excessive play, looseness may be felt in the steering and alignment angles may be affected. The steering system must be checked frequently so as to detect any looseness in the pitman arm.
