Bahraich in Uttar Pradesh has been facing a series of wolf attacks since March 2024, with a sharp increase in incidents from mid-July. As of early September, at least eight people, primarily children, have been killed, and around 36 others have been injured. The attacks are concentrated in villages where locals are often forced to sleep outdoors due to heat and power outages, making them more vulnerable. Many victims have been children taken from their homes during the night.
Experts suggest that these wolves may be attacking in retaliation for habitat loss or the killing of their cubs earlier in the year. Despite efforts by the forest department, which has captured four wolves, attacks have continued. There are concerns that some of the aggressive wolves are still at large.
Local authorities have ramped up patrolling, and villagers are being urged to stay indoors at night to reduce the risk.
