Belo Horizonte is a Brazilian city and the capital of the state of Minas Gerais. It is popularly known by the abbreviation BH. It was the first planned Brazilian city, which means that its urban design — streets, avenues, blocks and its surroundings — was designed by a team of engineers and architects, who defined the best conformation for the state capital.

Its population estimated by IBGE for July 1, 2021 was 2,530,701 inhabitants, being the sixth most populous municipality in the country, the third in the Southeast Region and the first in its state. With an area of approximately 331 km², it has a diverse geography, with hills and lowlands. With a distance of 716 kilometers from Brasília, it is the second closest state capital to the federal capital, after Goiânia.
