Powerful Hurricane Milton has reached the coast of Florida (USA) less than 2 weeks after Hurricane Helen raged there. Local residents share the first footage of the storm's passage on social networks. Yachts are washed ashore in Sarasota; in Fort Myers, the wind again knocked down power poles that had just been put in place after Hurricane Helen. The city of Venice (in Florida, not Italy) was partially under water as a result of the storm surge. Tampa authorities have suspended emergency services until it is safe for rescuers to be at the scene. The wind in the city is so strong that it is throwing cars around.
Even before the hurricane made landfall, numerous tornadoes were recorded in Florida, causing destruction. Milton set a record for tornadoes: there were more than 90 of them in one day, like no other hurricane. The hurricane is currently continuing to cross the Florida peninsula, weakening to a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 90 mph (140 km/h). The scale of the destruction is now impossible to assess, since many affected areas have no communications, no electricity and are impossible to reach.
