As a tradition, I hike one mountain in Japan during Yama no hi ( Mountain Day) holiday. Yesterday, I went up to Mt Jinba, famous for its day hiking and its close proximity to Tokyo. This is good alternative if you want to skip the crowd of Mt. Takao. Same train Station just an extra bus ride for Mt. Jinba.
