Have you ever heard the phrase “all sins are equal”? Analyzing this phrase is like reading the fine print for a new service or a big purchase. You want to know exactly what you’re getting into. You want to know what’s allowed, what’s not allowed, and what’s in the gray zone. This mindset doesn’t just occur when evaluating terms of service and contractual agreements. Often and without realizing it, we apply the same thinking about different types of sin. You see, Jesus is the standard for righteousness, and sin is what happens when we miss the mark. The thing about sin is it operates as a sickness for humanity, and we can’t escape it on our own. The good news is Jesus came, died, and rose again so we can be free and healed of this sickness. So all sins, no matter how big or small, fall under the grace of Jesus. In this way, all sins are equal. There’s nothing he can’t or won’t forgive. However, the consequences and ramifications of sins are not equal. The right question to ask when considering the issue of sin is “who do I want to become?” God has designed each of us for a unique and beautiful purpose. As we choose to follow Jesus and walk in our destiny, he transforms us. Keep in mind that we are either moving towards God or away from him. And all choices -- positive or negative -- accumulate over time and build something. This goes for consequences of sin too. No one accidentally or suddenly comes to a point of complete moral failure -- this builds over time. We are not alone because we have Holy Spirit to help us recognize our sinful choices, and we have the capability to access the self-control we need to make the right choices resulting in building a life that is centered on God’s Kingdom and not the worlds.
