This is a tribute to one of the greatest evangelists that there has ever been. John Wesley was born in 1703, the son of an Anglican minister and a devote mother, Susanna. His story is remarkable in that though Wesley was such a devoted son of the Church, he had been a dutiful and pious minister for many years, he did not find peace in his heart and assurance of his salvation until he was thirty five years old. It was the on the 24th May, 1738 when he had a profound experience, he wrote of this in his journal:
'In the evening I went very unwillingly to a society in Aldersgate Street, where one was reading Luther's preface to the Epistle to the Romans. About a quarter before nine, while he was describing the change which God works in the heart through faith in Christ, I felt my heart strangely warmed. I felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation; and an assurance was given me that He had taken away my sins, even mine, and saved me from the law of sin and death.'
This was to radically change his life, along with his brother Charles, who had a similar experience a few days before. Their mission was to set out to convert England and further afield. John saw the world as his Parish.
Ultimately they became mighty firebrands for God and changed the course of the the spiritual landscape of England over the next forty years. Thousands came to faith, especially among the working classes. It has been said that the Wesley's prevented the equivalent of a French Revolution in England. John was essentially the leader and teacher of the Methodist movement with Charles becoming their famous hymn writer who inspired their converts and those of all the other churches.
