Oban Hill Lochs / Flying fishing for wild brown trout / Hike & Fish
A Truly Wild Experience:

It’s been a few years since we last fished hill lochs south of Oban. Fishing these lochs again has been our priority this year but the covid restrictions delayed our plans. As soon as the restrictions eased we decided to go for it.

There are numerous lochs to choose from in the hills south of Oban. Each loch has its own characteristics and numbers and size of fish varies from loch to loch. Having previous experience of fishing these lochs made route planning and choosing best lochs to fish somewhat easier.

We decided to leave early on a very long drive. The weather forecast was bright sunshine and temperatures around 22 degrees, not ideal weather for trout fishing but being keen fishers we decided to go ahead anyway.

We arrived there around 10 in the morning, got the permits and drove up the hills. We had planned to fish 5 or 6 lochs during the day with fair bit of hike involved, deciding to fish the furthest loch first, a hike of around 1.5 hours from where we parked our car.

We arrived exhausted at the first loch. The fish in this loch, although smaller were free rising to our flies despite the bright sunshine. We only stayed there for an hour before moving to 2 other lochs close by in search of bigger trout.

As soon as we arrived one member of our party landed a decent size trout, putting our hopes and energies back up in the heat. We all caught a few fish here.

Despite the unfavorable conditions for trout fishing bright and warm but such was the thrill of catching a wild trout in amazing surroundings that we kept going on.

On the way back we stopped for a few casts in another attractive small loch covered mostly in lillies but the luck this time wasn’t with us. Arrived back to our car at 6 and decided to relax a bit and have a bbq before our evening fishing session.

After dinner we headed to our 5th and final loch of the day. As anticipated the evening session with the sun going down and getting bit cooler brought more fish on the feed. We connected with good sized fish in this loch, a perfect ending to an adventurous day.

Indeed it was a truly wild experience where we fished requiring cross country hike and good degree of navigational skills through boggy and very difficult path.

Although the weather wasn’t ideal for trout fishing we caught our fair share of fish in most of the lochs we fished and enjoyed walking in beautiful surroundings.

Guys! Thumbs up if you like the video, we will see you all until our next adventure. Take Care and Stay Safe.
