Tina Turner, born Anna Mae Bullock on November 26, 1939, was a renowned American singer, songwriter, and actress. She gained prominence in the 1960s and 1970s as part of the musical duo Ike & Tina Turner, known for their electrifying live performances and chart-topping hits. However, her journey to success was marred by an abusive relationship with Ike Turner.

After leaving Ike and going through a challenging period, Tina embarked on a remarkable solo career in the 1980s. Her breakthrough album, "Private Dancer" (1984), became a massive success and established her as a solo artist. The album produced several hit singles, including "What's Love Got to Do with It" and "Private Dancer," earning her multiple Grammy Awards and global recognition.

Tina Turner continued her successful solo career with albums such as "Break Every Rule" (1986) and "Foreign Affair" (1989). Her powerful voice, energetic performances, and undeniable stage presence solidified her status as one of the most influential and best-selling music artists in the world.

In addition to her music career, Turner also explored acting. She appeared in notable films like "Tommy" (1975), "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome" (1985), and "What's Love Got to Do with It" (1993), a biographical film that portrayed her tumultuous relationship with Ike Turner and her triumphant comeback.

Turner's retirement from performing was announced in 2008 after her final tour, the "Tina!: 50th Anniversary Tour." However, she collaborated on the documentary "Tina," released in 2021 on HBO, which delved into her life story, struggles, and triumphs.

Beyond her immense talent, Tina Turner was admired for her resilience and ability to overcome adversity. Her personal struggles, including surviving an abusive relationship and rebuilding her career, inspired countless individuals. Turner's contributions to the music industry cemented her as an icon, and she was recognized as one of the greatest singers in the history of rock music.

Throughout her career, Tina Turner received numerous accolades, including Grammy Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, and inductions into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame. Her influence on popular culture was undeniable, and her music continued to resonate with audiences worldwide.

Turner revealed in her 2018 memoir My Love Story that she had multiple life-threatening illnesses. She had high blood pressure since 1978, which remained mostly untreated, and resulted in damage to her kidneys and eventual kidney failure. In 2013, three weeks after her wedding to Erwin Bach, she had a stroke and needed to learn to walk again. In 2016, she was diagnosed with intestinal cancer. While she attempted to treat her health problems with homeopathy, they worsened.

Her chances of receiving a kidney transplant were considered low and she was urged to start dialysis. She signed up with an organization that facilitates assisted suicide, a procedure which is legal in Switzerland, becoming a member of Exit International. However her husband Bach offered to donate a kidney for transplant. Turner accepted his donation and had kidney transplant surgery on April 7, 2017.

On May 24, 2023, Turner died at her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland, at the age of 83, after years of illnesses
