GERD can be a tough diagnosis to get rated by the VA, but with a little preparation you CAN maximize your GERD VA rating. Here’s what you need to do:

1. Make sure your GERD is properly documented in your medical records. This includes all diagnoses, treatments, tests and surgeries related to GERD or acid reflux.

2. Gather evidence that GERD affects your quality of life. This includes reports from doctors on how GERD has limited or interfered with daily activities such as eating and sleeping, shortness of breath, chest pain and any other symptoms it causes.

3. Fill out the Disability Benefits Questionnaire (DBQ) accurately and fully so that the VA can clearly understand GERD's impact on your life.
