ABOUT this concert: - press release of 2005
The repertoire of the concert that harmonica player and professional whistler Jean ‘Toots’ Thielemans will present, consists of songs of composer Harold Arlen. Arlen is the man who composed the world wide famous Somewhere over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz and Stormy Weather. During the thirties and forties the American composed more than 400 songs and he is considered one of the most successful composers of popular music. Toots Thielemans loves Arlen’s work. He himself started his career at the beginning of the fifties as guitarist and harmonica player in the quintet of pianist George Shearing. An international breakthrough followed when he joined Benny Goodman on his European tour. Thielemans developed a new sound by playing guitar and whistling unisono. In 1962 he composed Bluesette, a piece that made the Belgian an international star. He is still very much in demand as an artist and travels all over the world with his ‘sandwich’, referring to his harmonica. Thielemans performs with his musical pal Kenny Werner, an orchestra and a couple of very special guests: Jamie Cullum, Cristina Branco and Lizz Wright.
