When we look at the steps you need to take to find the best fruit trees at your local nursery then we need to start at the very bottom and work our way to the top. Here are the details you need to know before buying your next fruit tree:

- Bags: understanding the bag and pot sizes fruit trees come in, as well as how fruit trees are often priced based on the size of bag they are in will help you shop around for the best possible tree for the best possible price

- Graft quality: buying a new fruit tree with a bad graft is setting you up for failure before you have even started. Knowing what to look for in the graft will help you pick a strong, healthy fruit tree. It is also really important to know what the final tree size and vigour will be based on the rootstock it is grown on.

- Graft type: do you want a large tree that grows really quickly or do you want a smaller tree that is self pollinating with a slower growth rate and high disease resistance? These are all characteristics you need to find out about the root stock the fruit tree is grown on. The root stock determines a huge amount of what the final mature tree will be.

- Tree structure & size: does your available space allow for large trees, just a single tree, multiples trees? These are all questions you need to be asking yourself before you go and look for your perfect fruit tree. You need to ask the nursery these questions to make sure you don't end up with trees that are not best suited to your specific growing space.

- Pollination: do you have space for a single tree or multiple trees? This is the main question you need to ask that is going to determine whether you need to find a self pollinating, or self fertile, fruit tree. If you get this wrong you could end up with a beautiful tree that you have done everything right with never giving you fruit.
