Back in the day, not only was the radio (and MTV) full of great songs but pretty much all of those songs contained some amazing melodic guitar solos. No matter what genre, it was customary to give the guitar player at least 8 bars of ear candy that wasn’t just a time to shred and cut loose. These solos were really part of the song!
This one in particular was always one of my favorites!
Culture Club was cranking out hits like crazy and this one is may be their best! Boy George is one of the most underrated singers there is and the band is right there with him. Roy Hay takes us on a melodic journey with a guitar tone that sounded like it came from outer space. I remember trying to learn it as a kid and always wanted to know how he got that sound. It was the start of my obsession with pedals and trying to come up with cool sounds of my own!
My favorite part was the guitar break at the end of the solo. I always thought it should have gone an extra round so I extended it on this one and took a few more bars for myself lol. Crank it up and of course listen to the original!!!
