The Nagcarlan Underground Cemetery (Libingan sa Ilalim ng Lupa ng Nagcarlan) is the only underground cemetery in the Philippines. It was built in 1845 as a burial site for Spanish friars, prominent town citizens and members of elite Catholic families. Considered as a historical landmark because of the important role it played during the various colonization periods in the Philippines, It was used by the Filipino Katipuneros as a secret meeting place in 1896. The National Historical Institute declared the underground cemetery as a national historical landmark in 1978.
