Near Walden, Colorado, April 2022. Male Greater Sage-Grouse congregate at display sites called "leks", where the females visit for side-by-side comparison shopping for the best genes, as evidently revealed by the quality and quantity of display. Just look at all the energy (and anatomy!) that goes into that display! This is what happens when males get locked into an evolutionary arms race for mating opportunities. The stakes are high: some studies show 2-3 males do 85% of the mating. The males provide no parental care -- in fact, it's unlikely they even know where the nests are.
