At the end of 1951 Alfa Romeo announced that they would withdraw from Formula 1, effectively eliminating every factory effort but Ferrari. To ensure a decent grid size, the FIA elected to run Formula 2 cars for the world drivers championship. The cheaper 2 liter formula kept the larger teams around, while also bringing in smaller teams already running Formula 2 such as Cooper and HWM.
For their part, Ferrari simply put a smaller engine into their already successful 166 design, with modified de dion suspension and a sleeker nose. Even after dropping their 2.5 liter V12 design down to an inline 4 cylinder of just 2 liters, the Ferrari engine boasted 165 horsepower, easily 50 more than the british teams.
1952 was a rout, with Ferrari winning every single round of the championship (sans Indy, which no one ever counts). Alberto Ascari set a record with 9 straight victories stretching into the 1953 season, and the Ferrari team would end up winning 14 in a row, with Fangio in a Maserati breaking the streak in the season finale at Monza. It's the most dominant 2 season stretch of any Grand Prix car in history.
