Artists of Vancouver Okinawa Taiko (バンクーバー沖縄太鼓) perform a traditional Japanese Eisa (エイサー) drum-dance to the famous song titled 神々の詩 マキシ・シングル・バージョン (Kamigamino Uta) by Himekami (姫神), a new-age musical group, during the 34th annual TAIWANfest at the Vancouver Art Gallery Square (šxʷƛ̓ənəq Xwtl’e7énk) in Vancouver, BC, Canada on Saturday, Aug. 31, 2024.

Vancouver Okinawa Taiko (formerly Yuaikai Ryukyu Taiko/元:友愛会琉球太鼓) is celebrating its 19th anniversary this year. The group promotes and preserves the Okinawan performing art of Eisa drum-dancing in the community and building friendship through Okinawan folk art.

Vancouver Okinawa Taiko performs at various multicultural festivals, charity and anniversary events across Metro Vancouver and the United States.

Eisa is a form of folk dance originating from the Okinawa Islands, Japan. In origin, it is an Obon (お盆) or just Bon (盆) dance that is performed by young people of each community during the Bon festival to honor the spirits of their ancestors. It underwent drastic changes in the 20th century and is today seen as a vital part of Okinawan culture.

TAIWANfest, formerly known as the Taiwanese Composers Music Festival, is an annual cultural festival held in Vancouver and Toronto. The original focus of TAIWANfest was to celebrate Taiwanese culture, however, in recent years, the festival expanded to include dialogues with local Canadian communities including Indigenous communities, Asian-Canadian communities, and other Asian cultures.
