Garden of Monoliths

This is 26 KMs from Jowai Town and around 60 KMs from Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya.

Monoliths exist throughout the length and breadth of the Khasi and Jaintia Hills in Meghalaya, India. However, the biggest collection of monoliths or Megalithic stones in one single area is in the north of the Nartiang market in West Jaintia Hills, District, Meghalaya.

It can be called as “Garden of Monoliths”. These consists of Menhirs (Upright stones) locally known as Moo Shynrang are dedicated to male ancestors and Dolmens (flat stones in the horizontal position) locally known as Moo Kynthai are dedicated to the women ancestors. Within the perimetre of these Megalithic collection stands the tallest Menhir erected by U Mar Phalyngki a trusted lieutenant of the Jaintia King to commemorate his victory in battle which is 18 Meters High and 18 inches thick. Other monoliths were erected by U Mar Phalyngki, U Luh Lyngskor Lamare and various clans of Nartiang village between 1500 A.D. and l835 A.D.

There is a small winding path that twists through and around the looming monoliths, providing a chance for you to explore and soak in the surreal scenes.
