This program is being planned to next run in Spring Break 2025.

Evolution in Darwin’s World and Ours introduces students to the history of evolutionary thought within the context of 19th century Victorian culture. Students discuss the nature of scientific inquiry and pre-Darwinian ideas, the development of Darwin’s theory and Alfred Russel Wallace’s role, and the reception of the Origin of Species. The many ways in which evolutionary theory relates to our everyday lives are also discussed.

To contextualize Darwin’s remarkable life and scientific contributions, we read Darwin’s highly engaging Autobiography, examine some of his personal correspondence, and consider historical analyses by Darwin scholars. Once abroad, students receive guided tours of the British Museum, Linnaean Society of London, Westminster Abbey, Natural History Museum (London) and Cambridge University, where Darwin received his baccalaureate degree. Students also tour Down House, where Darwin resided with his wife and children, conducting experiments and authoring his many books. This international experience reinforces the concepts learned during the pre-departure course. Students also enjoy unstructured days during which they can explore the cities and visit additional attractions as desired.
