PHOTOTROPISM --
The movement of plant part in response to light is called phototropism. If the plant part move toward light, it is called positive phototropism & on the other hand if the plant part move away from light, then it is called negative phototropism. The stem (shoot) of a growing plant toward light, so the stem of a plant shows positive phototropism on the other hand the root of a plant move away from light so the root of a plant show a negative phototropism.
The plant stem response to light & bend toward it due to the action of auxin hormone.
case1 - When sunlight come from above, then auxin hormone present in the tip of the stem spreads uniformly down the stem.Due to the equal presence of auxin, both the side of stem (A,B) grow equally rapidly & the stem grow straight up.
case2- When the light fall only on the right side of the stem (B) then the auxin hormones collect on the left side (shady side A) of the stem, away from light this is because auxin hormone prefer to stay in shade.
case3 - Now the more auxin is accumulated on the left side of the stem but not on the right side. Due to more auxin hormone, the left side of the stem grows faster than its right side where there is no auxin. Since the left side of the stem grows faster & becomes longer than its right side therefore the stem bend toward the right side ( in the direction of light ).
