I traveled to Lake Lure recently, to attend a friend's wedding and wanted to check something else out in the area before I left. I ended up at the Lake Lure Flowering Bridge. This historical bridge first opened to traffic in 1925 and was officially closed in 2011. It sat abandoned for a few years, and was actually slated for demolition at one point--however some members of the community presented their idea for a creative use of the old bridge. Today the bridge is home to over 700 plants (including large cacti!) and many interesting places to stop such as Mr. MacGregor's Garden, the Secret Garden...and a lot more. The garden extends beyond the bridge onto the banks beside it and underneath. I was also entertained by the garden's interesting uses of vintage items. The Lake Lure Flowering Bridge is free to visit and definitely worth a stop if you ever find yourself in the Lake Lure, Chimney Rock area of North Carolina. And bonus: Much of the 80's movie, Dirty Dancing, was filmed in this area!
