Shivneri Fort, located near Junnar in the Pune district of Maharashtra, holds great historical significance, particularly as the birthplace of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, the founder of the Maratha Empire. The fort's history dates back to the early 1st century AD, though it gained prominence during the reign of the Deccan Sultanates and the Mughal Empire.

Initially constructed as a defensive fort, Shivneri is strategically positioned amidst hills, surrounded by steep cliffs, making it a well-fortified site. It came under the control of several rulers over the centuries, including the Satavahanas, Yadavas, and later the Bahamani Sultanate. When the Bahamani Kingdom disintegrated, it was taken over by the Ahmednagar Sultanate.

In 1630, Shivaji Maharaj was born at Shivneri Fort to Jijabai and Shahaji Bhosale. Recognizing the strategic importance of the fort, Shahaji chose Shivneri as a safe and secure place for Jijabai during her pregnancy. Shivaji spent his early years at Shivneri, and it played a key role in shaping his leadership and warrior skills.

Over time, the fort changed hands between the Marathas and the Mughals during various conflicts. The British took control of it in the 19th century after the fall of the Maratha Empire. Today, Shivneri Fort stands as a symbol of Maharashtra’s rich heritage, attracting visitors for its historical relevance, architecture, and the panoramic views of the surrounding region.
