Through the middle of Sutter Creek, a small, foothills town born from the days of the California Gold Rush, runs a slow but vibrant stream, rich with life in many shapes and sizes.

While locals and tourists alike walk the main-street above, buying lattes and trinkets from the many bustling and inviting shops, several species of fish crowd the warm, shallow pools formed by the town’s namesake creek below.

With my sister, Amador county local Mandi Thompson, we brave crushing California summer heat, smokey air caused by the statewide wildfires of August 2020, and the omnipresent pandemic, all in hopes of discovering...
