This song tells the story of the finding of the True Cross. According to the Golden Legend, after her conversion, St Helena, the mother of Emperor Constantine, made her pilgrimage to the Holy Land. There, she commanded the destruction of the pagan temples and the building of churches in their place.

During this pilgrimage, she met a man named Judas (who later became St Macarius of Jerusalem). He told the Empress where the True Cross was buried. St Helena went to the place and started an archeological dig to find the Cross. Her archeological digging found three crosses which were believed to belong to Jesus and the two thieves who were crucified beside Him. To find the True Cross, a test was conducted. They brought the corpse of a young man and he was touched to the crosses. When the body came into contact with the True Cross, life returned to the man.

The True Cross was then taken to a church in Jerusalem and was kept there. St Helena took a fragment of the True Cross and brought it to Rome, where it is still kept today in the Basilica of the Holy Cross.
