In the county of Tyne and Wear is the most northerly city in England - Newcastle upon Tyne.

It was founded in the 2nd century AD, originally as a Roman settlement under Emperor Hadrian before later becoming a part of the kingdom of Northumbria.

In the 11th century, the eldest son of William the Conqueror, Robert Curthose built a wooden motte and bailey castle after returning south from a campaign in Scotland, of which the city is named after. There are no remains of the motte and bailey, however the stone castle keep built under Henry II in the 12th century still stands, and features around the 9 minute mark.

Newcastle is renowned for its coal mining and shipbuilding industries, both of which played crucial roles in the Industrial Revolution of the 19th century. Perhaps the most iconic landmark is the impressive feat of engineering that is the Tyne Bridge. Opened in 1928, the bridge links Newcastle on the north bank to the town of Gateshead on the south bank. So in fact the opening shots in the first few seconds of the video are of Gateshead.

ADDITIONAL NOTES: At the 17 minute mark we see Grey's Monument. This is dedicated to Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey from the neighbouring county of Northumberland. Grey was Prime Minister from 1830 to 1834, during which time the Slavery Abolition Act was passed. Oh, and Earl Grey Tea was named after him!

And here's a behind-the-scenes fun fact: whilst walking down Northumberland Street from around the 19 minute mark, we hear, and later briefly see, a busker so talented that he effectively got this video flagged for copyright! Which means I had a choice to either mute the video for a minute or two, or share this video's ad revenue with the David Bowie estate. I chose the latter.
