The old town of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria is also called Vegueta and is the oldest part of the city. In 2007 it was put on the national list of proposals (tentative list) for inclusion as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the main square, the Plaza Santa Ana, stands the five-aisled Santa Ana Cathedral of the Diocese of the Canary Islands from 1497. The old town is known for its historic buildings and narrow streets. There are many bars and restaurants offering local specialities.
