Le Cimitière de Montmartre, the third largest cemetery in Paris, is only a block from the Moulin Rouge–a near neighbor to the city's most notorious quarter for pleasure seekers.

But the cemetery itself is surprisingly peaceful and incredibly thought-provoking. Both the graves of the famous (including Berlioz, Foucault, and Degas, to name only three) and the obscure are worth a closer look; and the tangle of monuments is sublimely beautiful, even in decay.
