The Last of Us is a classic, and the greatest part of the game is its characters. Ellie and Joel are the beating heart of the game; without Ellie and Joel, the Last of Us would be left a husk. These characters are often cited as peoples' favorite characters in gaming.

Ellie and Joel are well-written. That much is clear. But, what does it mean for them to be well-written? What about Joel and Ellie works so well, versus other game characters?
